There are many advantages to sending your application by e-mail or filling in an online application form, with speed and reduced costs doubtlessly two of the most important. Many companies now use databases to handle job applications, so being able to send your details in electronic format becomes a "must".
Before submitting your application:
- Find out all you can about the company from its homepage.
- Print the job descriptions and forms and read them offline.
- Check out the application options. Can you send an online application or is there only an address provided for written applications?
- Bear in mind that although communication on the internet is generally fairly informal, your application should still be polite, carefully prepared and in line with general application guidelines.
- Keep your application as detailed as necessary yet as accurate and concise as possible. Long texts are more difficult to digest on the screen, but your application should still provide a clear picture of your educational background and career history. Making it too brief might raise unnecessary questions.
- Make sure you send all attachments in common file formats and don’t send scanned copies of your certificates with your initial application unless this is specifically requested. Always zip large files.
- Avoid using foreign characters wherever possible, as some software programs cannot interpret them properly.
- Print your application before you send it off. Some mistakes, e.g. unintentional line breaks or irregular margins, are easier to see on paper than on the screen. Don’t forget, any documents sent in electronic format should also form a presentable application when printed out.
- Don’t forget to quote the relevant reference number!
- Even the best online application is no use if the recipient can’t read the mail or open the attachments. If you have not had any response within a week, we recommend that you call to enquire if the company did indeed receive your application.
